What exactly is green office furniture?

For new furniture, how green a product is will depend on factors, such as: the percentage and type of recycled or sustainable raw materials used, the amount of energy used and emissions produced in the manufacturing process, as well as, the amount and type of packaging utilized.

For Green Buildings, furniture must be certified to meet Indoor Air Quality standards. Finally, to be green new furniture must be designed with the end in mind – meaning that when disassembled at end-of-life most of its' components should be able to be reused instead of placed in landfills.

How green is USED office furniture?

Used furniture has already been manufactured and regardless of method, its' green impact has mostly been felt. The green proposition behind used furniture is fairly straightforward – keep as much furniture out of landfills for as long as possible. Fortunately, there is an abundance of quality used furniture available to be refurbished and recycled.

With used furniture virtually no packaging is used in its' shipment. Additionally used furniture is typically shipped across town, whereas new furniture (particularly for the Bay Area) is shipped across the country.
